The park was gazetted in 1952 and later renamed Queen Elizabeth after the visit of Her majesty the Queen of England 1954. An abundance wildlife thrives in its diverse 1,978 sq.km ecosystem. Characterized with sprawling savanna plains, sparkling volcanic crater filled lakes, thickets, tropical forests and swamps. The park’s center-piece is the Kazinga Channel which connects Lake Edward and Lake George. There are over 600 bird species including the shoebill stork and 98 mammal species including the tree climbing lions. A highlight of game viewing will be to take boat cruise on the channel
